  • Best thing I've learned from five years of racing: don't pick a bike saddle based on looks

A few years back, I did the 7.5 mile Potomac River Swim with a buddy and had a good time. Needing some motivation for swim training this year, I decided to give the race another go. This time around wasn’t quite as fun as the first time, but it was a good learning experience.

As I first few miles of the marathon clicked off, I never saw a mile marker. Having left the garmin at home, my pacing was entirely up in the air. Was I going too fast or too slow? The answer to this question would come back to haunt me late in the race.
